EQUINE LIFESTYLE PORTRAIT FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What if my horse won’t stand still or is naughty?

Its is a good idea to brush up on your ground work prior to the shoot, if your horse can stand still and next to you for a few seconds, the images we take together will improve greatly. We will work with you and help you achieve this. We understand that horses, like people can get bored, taking your horse for a walk will help and we will bring along a few tricks and treats.

How do I prepare, leather Halter, Lead Rope or Bridle?

Once your booking is confirmed, we’ll provide a separate information sheet about preparing for your shoot. In brief, we suggest you bath your horse the morning of your shoot, then keep him or her stabled until we arrive.
We’ll usually use a halter for some photographs and bridle for others, so a clean halter (ideallyblack or brown leather or a neutral colour like blue/brown) and a clean bridle is essential, along with a saddle if you’d like some ridden shots. It’s also a good idea to have a few treats around to keep your horse attentive during the shoot. on the day, make sure you allow ample time to prepare your horse. We suggest bathing your horse either the night before, or on the morning of the shoot, then keeping him or her stabled until the session. Most of the time, we suggest that manes and tails are left loose, clean, brushed and tidy; with some horses, though, plaiting can look better. Groom your horse as if you were going to a show, and have hoof oil ready for just before the session starts. We always have ample wet wipes and tissues around to keep muzzles clean.

If your horse can be a little nervous or “full of beans” without exercise, we suggest lunging or riding him or her on the morning of the shoot. This will usually take the edge off this and settle him or her ready for the session.

Remember on the day, all you have to do is relax and have fun with your four legged partner, and we will do the rest! Photographing horses, we know, takes time – like humans they have good and bad days, and it can take a little patience.  Good preparation helps make a wonderful experience and allows us to capture some amazing images

What clothing do you recommend for me?

When a booking is made, we will send you our Thank You & Hello information sheet. From the feedback we have received people have stated that they found the guidance really useful.

How many photos will you take?

This depends on the type of equine portrait you have booked, but regardless of the time, you will always have enough images to choose from.

will I receive all of the photos you take?

The honest answer is no, but please allow me to explain why.

Firstly it depends on the type of equine portrait you have booked.

However, regardless of the equine portrait you have booked, you can purchase additional images, prints and products. Please contact me for full details and prices.

After the shoot I back up all of the images I have taken and then look through them for sharpness and composition, so that you don’t have to look through loads and loads of images.

You get to see only the best images which makes choosing the images you want a little harder.

Why do I do this? If I am not happy with an image, you probably wont be either.

I really like the dark and dramatic equine images with dark backgrounds will I receive one?

Creating dark and dramatic equine images requires some specific conditions. Firstly, only the Deluxe and Bespoke Equine Portrait packages offer this style of photography. There are locations where we can guarantee this style will work. Large barns and riding arenas are perfect for this type of photography.  Any areas with dark green backgrounds can also work, depending on the time of day. We will always discuss dark and dramatic image locations with you and more often than not be able to accommodate this style of photography.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my photoshoot?

The weather is one of those unpredictable things in the UK.

Generally, if it is raining or windy your images could end up not looking so good and for safety reasons it is better to be safe than sorry. We keep a close eye on the weather and will contact you the day before the shoot if we have concerns about the weather conditions. You may decide to postpone the shoot for another time, or we may have to cancel the shoot. We certainly do not cancel shoots at a whim, but we always put safety first. However, if we do have to cancel the shoot, we will work with you to find the next available date and time that is more suitable.

Where will my Equine Lifestyle Portrait shoot take place?

Our equine and canine portrait shoots take place within a 40 mile radius of Leeds, or where you are located. If you have concerns about the suitability of your yard, stables and the surroundings, just let us know.

We love planning the finer details of our shoots with you and we’re always open to ideas.

We’re very happy to travel for shoots and include up to 40 miles travel (from WF33QN) in our session fees. Beyond this, mileage is charged at 45p/mile. If several of you would like a session, you’re welcome to split the travel costs.

Should I ride my horse before a photoshoot?

If your horse tends to be spirited, we suggest lunging or riding on the morning of the shoot, before you bath him or her. This should take the edge of his or her energy.

You use flash will this scare my horse?

We combine flash and ambient light to create equine portraits that can add impact and dimension to our images. We have found that most horses are fine with flash, even very sensitive ones. We always take things slowly, show the horse our equipment and test the flash a few times to make sure they’re acclimatised before we start the shoot.

What if i own more than one horse?

All of our Portraits include up to two horses or dogs, excluding the Taster session. Please be aware of the duration of the shoot you have booked in relation to the number of horses or dogs you want photographed.

If you would like more than two horses or dogs photographed at the same time, please contact us to discuss your options.

What about hair and makeup?

To keep our prices reasonable K2photographic do not provide hair and make up services. With The Bespoke service I to provide information about Hair & Makeup Artists in the Leeds Area.

How long does it take before images can be viewed & selected?

Images are ready to be viewd & selected approximately one week after the shoot.  For prints and products, the waiting time is  two to three weeks.
